Calling all creatives

shoplocalvert-20111
The Pyrmont-Ultimo precinct is home to a high number of important global creative enterprises, not least the Australian headquarters of Google. Just a few years ago, the idea of “google” as a verb seemed silly. Now, it is an accepted and most popular pastime. Google’s Australia outpost is located in Pyrmont, joining a hub of creative media including newspapers, radio and television stations, advertising agencies and other creative enterprises. PUCC itself will be creating a guide to local creative industries in the coming months, to be featured on this page and in a separate guide published in March/April. Watch this space for local profiles, and if you or someone you know would like to participate, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Looking forward to hearing from all you creatives in Pyrmont and Ultimo.

With the Australian carbon tax still hotly debated, UTS Business School Lecturer Dr Ian McGregor, Institute for Sustainable Futures Research Director Dr Chris Riedy and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Associate Professor James Goodman will take stock of the current situation. The trio will discuss a positive climate change program during the UTSpeaks public lecture ‘Progress or Procrastination?’ on 28 September at 6 pm at University Hall, building 4, 745 Harris St in Ultimo.

All aboard: Antarctica

robert_falcon_scottA century years after its tragic end, the story of British explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to Antarctica is being told in an international exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

Scott's last expedition reunites equipment used by Scott and his team together with rare scientific specimens collected during the 1910-1913 expedition for the first time since their use in Antarctica.

At the centre of the exhibition will be a life-size representation of Scott's base camp. Visitors can walk inside and get a sense of the everyday realities for the expedition's members, such as cramped conditions and the wealth of scientific investigations.

Food tins including Fry's Cocoa, Trufood Trumilk, and Symington's Pea Flour recovered from the hut will be on display together with instruments, a microscope, and even Scott's gramophone. Photographs life in camp and poignant letters and diaries by expedition members create a vivid picture of their struggle for survival.
